This tissue is found in the cerebellum, cerebrum, and brain stem. Grey matter is responsible for all the important brain functions. Grey matter refers to unmyelinated neurons and other cells of the central nervous system and is found in the brain, brainstem and cerebellum, and throughout the spinal cord. Grey matter is responsible for processing information, while white matter helps to transmit signals between different areas of the brain. Together, these two types of tissue make up the brain and spinal cord. Grey matter, named for it’s pale colour, is mostly composed of neuronal cell bodies, while white matter consists of myelinated nerve fibers. The central nervous system (CNS) is made up of grey and white matter.
